If I'm a prospective wedding client, what's the one thing that
would most likely convince me to hire you?
How
different my pictures look, especially when images are photographed
indoors (which most are during a wedding day). My images appear
to have been photographed with just the available light, much like
scenes in a movie. The next time you look at indoor wedding photos,
notice how dark the background is - if, indeed, the photographer
shows the background. Because of my commercial background, very
early in my career I learned that pointing a flash at someone was
the least flattering way to photograph someone. And you also don't
see much of the background if someone is in the middle of a room.
My clients often host their receptions at sites they want to remember
- and see in their photographs. I was taught to not point a flash;
to use light in a way that art directors and graphic designers know
makes photographs (and people) look their best. I don't think it
was a coincidence that the wedding client who invested the most
in my photography was a Hollywood film director. As one other professional
photographer who was attending a wedding of mine said to me, "this
is the gourmet lighting of location photography."
As much as I love the feel of natural lighting in my wedding images,
the primary reason I use the lighting the way I do is because (as
a result of my lighting) my images of you and your guests will be
more relaxed, genuinely animated and really show the vibrancy of
your wedding day. Your wedding day is one of the most emotional
days of your life, and my lighting is the key to showing the romance
and celebration of your wedding day. Most of us, I think, look our
best when we don't know we're being photographed or, at the very
least, the photographer is far enough away that we don't feel intruded
upon. My lighting gives me the unique ability to do that. The only
time during the wedding day I want my clients to pose is for the
formals. For the rest of the day, I feel that I've been my most
effective if I've gone unnoticed. My lighting is the key to accomplishing
that.

So you're a photojournalist?
Certainly
when I'm photographing in a candid style, I do it as a photojournalist.
To be a great wedding photographer, however, one also needs to excel
at portraiture for the formals, and excel at still-life photography
to capture images like table settings, the lace on a gown, earrings,
shoes, floral arrangements - things that, when added together, breathe
a richness into the wedding day. I've been a professional photographer
for nearly twenty years, and I can tell you that wedding photography
is one of the most demanding areas of location photography and,
probably, any area of professional photography.

How much experience do you have in black and white?
While I was a
commercial photographer (see Credentials)
at least ninety percent of the images I created were in black and
white. Few wedding photographers can offer clients that much experience.
Whether a photographer uses film or digital, being able to "see"
in black and white is critical. One needs to be much more sensitive
to tones and contrast when using black and white. I consider my
experience seeing in black and white to be one of my greatest strengths.
Just how much of your wedding you'd like to see in black and white
is one of the questions I raise while you review my work.
The most important thing to me is this: that when you look at my
photographs of your wedding day there's this feeling of "WOW,
you really photographed this in a way that I had always dreamed
of wanting to remember it!" Whether that vision is in black
and white, color, sepia or a mix of all three is up to you - I want
to use my special talents so your wedding day is remembered as being
just as wonderful as it really was.

What's included in your packages?
Each package
includes a choice of several, very different styles of wedding albums
(prints included), proof pages (or you can upgrade to individual
proofs), my time (it's guaranteed in our contract that I'll personally
photograph your wedding day for however many hours stated) and an
assistant. If you don't want a package I offer a flat fee for my
time, an assistant and a high-resolution CD of your color images
and a low-resolution CD of your black and white images. Specific
details and pricing information is discussed when we meet.

One last piece of advice?
Set up a meeting
now while you're thinking about it. Strike while the iron is hot.
Don't procrastinate. As Nike says, "Just do it!" My
number is (781) 326-8916.
